Staghorn ferns have two different types of fronds: the large antler-shaped ones that lend the plant its name, and the hard rounded shield fronds that grow at the base of the plant. Because these plants are epiphytic (they grow up the sides of trees rather than in soil in nature), their shield fronds have evolved to cover and protect the root ball.
Bright, natural light but no direct sun. Water weekly by running the entire basket under the faucet or shower with room temp. water. The moss should stay consistently moist but not soggy. Prefers high humidity - put it near a humidifier or grow in a bathroom. Do not remove any brown shields.
