Native to Southeast Asia and Australia, Hydnophytum are epiphytic plants that grow on the sides of spongy trees rather than in soil. They're known as ant plants because their swollen caudices develop holes in them, which are then colonized by local ants. In return for shelter, the ants protect the plant from predators and provide fertilizer and nutrients. But don't worry; these plants don't attract ants to them, so they make excellent pest-free houseplants.
